Game 1 saw Rod snatch a last gasp win against Hanne Marks. Trailing by well over 100 with only a few tiles left, Rod pulled out EPEIRAS, followed by an X play for over 50, then still trailing, played out with STYGIAN to secure the win. Only a bingo would have done.
Rod and I both lost to Joanne Craig and Chris May during the course of the day. Rod's loss to Joanne was unfortunate, as with only one tile in the bag at the end of the game, he hooked MANGLERS to DOTER for a 92 point score to take a 20 point lead. Unluckily, the last tile in the bag was a V which was unplayable, enabling Joanne to play out piecemeal and win by over 30 points.
Earlier Rod had accounted for John, so that going into the last game, John had only lost one game, Rod had lost two and I had lost three games.
Johns all-important last game against Sue Gergelifi saw him establish a new national record of five consecutive bingos in his first five plays, finishing with a tournament high game score of 593. His bingos were ATREsIA, AUDIENT, dISLIMB, NEGATIVE and lasly REFUGED, hooked to make NEGATIVED.
Meanwhile Rod and I faced each other in another crucial game. A loss for me would have ended any aspirations I had of remaining in contention for a representative spot. Drawing a blank in my first pick up, and getting down eNHALOED on my second move enabled me to establish a lead that Rod was unable to break despite his SALTIEST and JOINeRS.
Such was the tension of the day, I am unable to report on any other great plays or incidents which no doubt transpired. It was especially good to see all players accounted for at starting time, and the lovely hostess and organiser Raya Wilkinson win one of the major raffle prizes. Raya will be amongst the healthy contingent of NSW players in Adelaide next week, taking part in what promised to be a thrilling National Championship.
