A large turnout of 90 people contested this Winter tournament where you can help your club win the perpetual Marj Babb shield whilst competing for a myriad of cash and novelty prizes. Wins by John Holgate in A division and Jean Balmer in C division helped to keep the Marj Babb shield in Wollongong. An exciting last round win by Therese Bruce in D division allowed the home team to win by a margin of just one win.
In the final round, John had to defeat a resurgent Joan Rosenthal and rely on up-and-comer Kris Logan to beat current No. 1 Bob Jackman. This indeed eventuated. It was unusual that John triumphed without having to play placegetters 3,4,5 and 6. The fact that the 12th placegetter was only one win away from the 1st placegetter demonstrated just how close and competitive the A division has become in NSW. Other happy champions were Norma Tracey in a strong B division and Diana Hilly who won all 7 of her games in D division.
Four novices - Alan Honey, Frank Hunt, Stacey Lock Lee and Brian Irwin - chose Wollongong to make their debut. They all enjoyed themselves in friendly D division and Alan even pinched 2nd place. A certain father was nonplussed when his 17 year old daughter who had never played a game of Scrabble managed to pick up 4 wins and 2 high word prizes. Even more stunned was her competitive older brother who only managed 3 wins.
Thanks again go to tournament director Rene Chelton, daughter and computer operator Marilyn, and the dedicated band of Wollongong club members who all helped to make this yet another successful Scrabble promotion.
