School Scrabble® Classroom Rules

Updated 18th December 2003
The following set of abbreviated Scrabble playing rules is recommended for use in classroom play and school Round Robin tournaments. Students representing their school in Region or State competitions will need to play according to the Australian National Rules of Tournament Play in such competitions.
Preparing to Start Playing
Both players should check that all 100 tiles are accounted for before the start of play.

Starting the Game
Unless otherwise specified, the start is decided by both teams drawing a tile. The team who draws the tile closer to the start of the alphabet goes first.

Making a Play
Letters must be played in a straight line. All new words played additional to the main word being played are included in the score.

Allowable Words
Words allowable are all those two- and three-letter words used in NSW club and tournament play, and their inflections, and all words found in the Macquarie Dictionary (excepting capitalised words, hyphenated words and abbreviations)

Scoring
Each team should write down their score and their opponent's score for each move, as well as both progressive scores.

If all seven tiles are used in a move, 50 points are added to the player's score.

Changing Tiles or Passing
Teams may change as many tiles as they like, provided there are at least seven tiles in the bag. The team who changes misses that turn. Teams may also pass as an alternative to changing tiles.

Incorrect Moves
If the word played is judged to be not allowed, the team who played the incorrect word must take back the tiles from the board and then miss that turn.

Ending the Game
The game is finished when one team clears their rack with an allowable word(s) and there are no tiles left in the bag. The value of the tiles of the team not going out are added to the score of the player going out as well as subtracted from their own score.

If the game is not finished within the allocated time, the value of the tiles on each team's rack is subtracted from each team's final score.
