National Scrabble Championship

3rd to 5th April 2021


This is the 7th Nationals to be held in Sydney. The first was in 1987 and was won by John Holgate, still an active and accomplished player who is involved in running this year's event. In 1990 the Championship was won by Nick Ivanovski, current president of Scrabble Victoria.

In 1995 the there were two Nationals, with the double dictionary rendition taking part in the Balmain Leagues Club, Sydney. Joan Rosenthal was the winner on that occasion.

The 1999 Nationals were held at the Landmark Hotel in Potts Point and Paul Cleary was the winner. In 2014 The Kings School in North Sydney, overlooking Sydney Harbour was the chosen venue and a young David Eldar took the title. Finally, in 2014 at Club Burwood RSL Daniel Piechnick won 19 games to clinch the title.


The playing venue is the spacious Grand Ballroom of the Bankstown Sportsclub at 8 Greenfield Parade, Bankstown. Parking is available under the venue all day free of charge for those driving. Travelodge accommodation is available on the site of the venue. A link to booking accommodation at a discounted rate for the Championship is provided below. There are numerous restaurants with in the club, and many well-priced mainly Vitnamese restaurants very close to the club. Format and Qualification

  • The tournament is open to all overseas and international players
  • Australian players rated over 1300 at time of entry are eligible to play in the Championship Division. Those rated below 1300 will be entered into the plate Division

  • 24 games - 8 each day
  • Repeat pairings after game 12
  • 25 minutes per player per game

Entry Fee & Registration

  • Entry fee: $150 AUD, or $155 if paying at entry

In view of prevailing conditions, entry fees paid direct into the Scrabble NSW account will not be sought until March 2021.

Please note the entry fee does not cover meals within the club.
