The cosy licensed Chatswood Club, nestling amid Chatswood's high rise, is the home to the well established Chatswood Scrabble Club.
The Scrabble group occupies the bistro area every Wednesday night, from 6.30 pm to whenever. Play will last until at least 9.30, but if Rick the barman decrees otherwise, playing time may be extended by up to one hour.
Our treasurer, Louise Kobler, will only request $1 for an evenings play if you are a member of ASPA (NSW), otherwise the cost for non-members is $2.00 per night. First time players are usually exempt from playing fees.
Play is conducted in a relaxed atmosphere, with no hard and fast rules applying. All of the Masters players who attend regularly will take their turn in playing newcomers.
In return, it is expected that no game will last no longer than 50 minutes. Pairing of players is usually done by the simple winners play winners formula.
The Chatswood Scrabble Club endeavour to make all newcomers feel welcome. Serious players are encouraged and helped at every opportunity, and will find their game quickly improves as strategies and word power are improved by attending the club. Purely social players on the
other hand may be slightly daunted by the style of play, and would be advised to consider attending the Chatswood day group.

The aim of the Western Scrabble Network is to encourage Scrabble players of
all ages to achieve tournament standard play, and to provide provide a
framework which allows players to improve their game to their chosen level.
Most of the meetings occur at members homes at locations and times to suit a
wide range of players. The Network welcomes players from anywhere in
Sydney's Greater West as well as the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and
Macarthur regions.
We welcome players of all abilities, however we strongly encourage players
to complete their games in 22 minutes or less. This ensures that attendees
to meetings can be expected to play at least 4 games over the course of 3
hours with 4 different opponents. From time to time, the club will hold
4-game mini-tournaments based on the Wollongong WORDS model. We allow
newcomers to refer to word lists to gain familiarity, but encourage players
to play without support over time, and to conduct post-game analysis. Whilst
our focus is on education and on developing tournament players, we still
find time to socialise and have fun. Membership to the Network is $20 for 12
months from the date of joining, which entitles members to the following
services:
- A listing in the "Western Scrabble Network" directory where other
members can view your details and can contact you.
- Ability to participate without cost in regular events held by the
Western Scrabble Network (such as mini-tournaments, training days, social
games get-togethers, etc)
- Contact with people who can assist you in developing your Scrabble
skills.
- Access to the "Western Scrabble Network" directory from which you
are free to contact other members who you think you would like to meet for
Scrabble games.
- Assistance in getting set up to play Scrabble on-line, if you
choose.
- In addition, you will have access to loan the clubs resources if
desired so that you can stage your own group meetings. Loans are to be
arranged through the Network's Equipment Officer.
Club Contact is Tony Hunt, phone 6493 6861.
Wollongong Club
WORDS (Wollongong Order of Really Dedicated Scrabblers)
conducts its meetings at the Collegians Rugby League Football Club
at 3a Charlotte St, Wollongong. There are two meetings.
The Monday night meeting is from 7pm to 11pm and is run along the lines of a four game mini-tournament with "scratchies" being awarded to the first three placegetters. A tried and tested handicap scheme is applied to ensure that all games are competitive. The Thursday afternoon meeting runs from 1pm to about 5pm and is more informal and unstructured. Players are able to refer to any word references during play and there is no strict time limit for games. Scrabble sets, score sheets, clocks and Scrabble references are provided.
WORDS hosts at least one major tournament per year and is proud to be able to use a large venue complete with an inexpensive motel on-site. This is one of the only tournaments that include lunch in the modest entry cost. These always-friendly scrabble tournaments usually attract a large attendance. At the end of the year, WORDS holds its own internal championship tournament where trophies are awarded for outright and handicap winners as well as for highest game score and highest word score.
The annual fee is $15 which includes a $10 joining fee
for ASPA. A fee of $1 applies to the Monday night and this
contributes to each week's "scratchie" prizes as well as the
Christmas dinner at the end of the year. No fee is applied for
Thursday afternoon meetings or for first-time players.
