Peter Shaw greeted me on the steps of the venue, and this I saw as an omen as Peter is usually the last person to arrive due to continual public transport glitches. Fortunately for me, it was only a bad omen for Peter.
A few hiccups were evident at the commencement of proceedings. Pat Rae, our trusty word adjudicator was assigned to a post with a single, unconnected Star Printer sitting on the table. After hastily setting it up for Pat while turning back challengeers, I was finally able to commence play ten minutes into the first game!
One player Tricia Shephard had been incorrectly assigned a rating of 1217 instead of the proper 800 (approx) and placed in B Division instead of C. When she pointed this out to one of Gordon's helpers she received no joy, and was forced to play out of her depth all day. Money back for Tricia, I reckon!
The announcements from Judy Hay were crystal clear, despite using the same microphone as Gordon who for some reason could be not be clearly heard! But thank you Gordon all the same - you provided us with a day of Scrabble and some dry humour along the way.
Speaking of Scrabble, Joan Rosenthal continued her good form form to beat John Holgate in the last game of the day and secure top spot on spread in A Division. In B Division, Tony Hunt led all the day to win comfortably on spread, while Judy McGuinness in C had both a large spread and an extra half win to take the honours. Jan Pincott was a noteworthy winner of D Division as she also managed to record the highest word score of the day, being 140 for EARRINGS. And the Richards family recorded a net gain of 7 ratings points to take back to sunny Queensland.
