NSW Matchplay Qualifier - 26th February 2005

Report from Tony Hunt

43 players met at Padstow RSL Club to battle it out for the 16 spots in the Matchplay event. There were a few notable events and surprise results during the course of the day. Congratulations to Esther Perrins on her win. Please refer to Bob's email for detailed results.

An interesting situation ensued when, in one round, 4 players played the wrong opponents - no doubt one of the contributing factors being that there were two Margaret A's involved. TD Wilma was able to do a work around, and ensured that the 9 rounds were completed and presentations made before the lights were turned out at 6 pm.

Rod Talbot played two consecutive words for greater than 100 points, DUALIZES for 107 followed by OXIDASES for 101. In another game Rod scored 107 points again for WHORLED. Possibly, Rod was the only player to play words valued at 100 points or more, but I may be proven wrong on that one. There was a rumour circulating that Rod was getting messages transmitted to a device in his ear, but this rumour was found to be totally baseless. Pat Schuberg was able to find one of the only 2 bingos in the rack CEGNST? (1).

Western Scrabble Network's rising star Frank Tao was able to grab a swag of 161 ratings points, helped along by wins against John Holgate and Jean McGiffen. Well done Frank!

In my game against Rene Chelton, I was pleased to find the 9 letter word through UT with the rack ABEINO? , drawing on my memory of studies in organic chemistry (2). Rene promptly hooked an S on the end, making a 10 letter word.

Other games in which the winner was rated significantly below the loser were Colin Locke's victory over Pat Schuberg and Mark Smith's close win over Chris May. Of course, I guess its presumptuous to read too much into the results of single games, but it does highlight that the open format does allow for the lower rated players to claim a few scalps.

Thanks to the fellow committee members of ASPA NSW for helping the day run smoothly, and a special thanks to Sunny Wright for providing an emergency sugar supply ensuring that Scrabblers' energy levels remained adequate during the long afternoon stint of 5 games.

1. Pat played CyGNETS, the other solution being CoNGEST, which some had trouble pronouncing when they thought the meaning may be "an exponent of the conga" or maybe "the most cong*". Someone decided to look up the definition, and one of those "aha!" moments was had.

2. IsOBUTANE
