This report is coming from a person who sat on the sidelines for the whole tournament. It was really hard being there and not playing, watching the games unfold..all the faces concentrating..all the shoulders hunched over the racks of tiles. Some players trying to get more comfortable took their shoes off. Occasionally a mobile phone would ring and its owner scrambled into their bag to answer, or hopefully, turn it off.
It was interesting to watch, whilst doing my chores, the moves being made. Some were extremely confident in what they were doing, others took a little longer to consider their best option. All, I hope, enjoyed the day.
We had two dropouts, taking our numbers down to 99. and almost all arrived on time. " @#$%^$%" trains, the late ones said. Thankfully they were both in the same section and so, were paired together for the first game.
We had visitors from the South Coast, a lady from Gunnedah, two people South West Rocks and Kempsey and the usual few from the Blue Mts. We thank them for travelling the distances they do, it all helps to make for a very successful tournament.
In Masters, Joan Rosenthal took out the top honours. Wayne Jones, who usually plays down a grade aquitted himself really well againt some of the big guns, winning 4 games and seeing him margin go up by 66 pts, Well done Wayne.
Advanced section saw three of our local ladies, Jan T , Donna and Fay W. fill the top places. All, I think, were well pleased with the results. For some its been a long dry spell (a bit like our wheather at the moment). Jan had a clean sweep with 7 wins and a rating gain of 87 pts)
In C Section ,or Intermediate as we know it, we again saw three of the fairest sex receiving the prizes. They were Lauraine Overton (7 wins plus 95 more rating points), Maree Heynen and Ivana Duria
Recreation turned out to be the battle of the novices. From the Balmain Bugs Club, Stuart Pridham won 7 from 7 in his first tournament. Lisa Terry, a young lady who only plays on the computer, won 5, and David Smith, the father of one of our local player who happened to be visiting from Melbourne, came in third, also with 5 wins. Let hope that he will now join a local club in his own area. Another Recreation player to watch is 14 year old John Hamilton. From the Blue Mts, he was the biggest mover of the day, his rating going up a massive 116 points...Well done John. He is a member of the ever growing Western Scrabble Network and just recently had his first ever win over master's player Tony Hunt.
All in all the day was a great success. The Woy Woy ladies did a fabulous job with the NIBBLIES (this is NOT a word) between games. Wilma Vialle as TD, had complete control over the computer. Her only problem was a printer ribbon which would not do as it was told and slot in where it should go. Thanks to her, we started on times and finished ahead of time.
