Australian Championships 2006: Accommodation

ACCOMMODATION

Hotels closest to Grammar

Albert Park Hotel  551 Wickham Tce.1800 777 702  This is the closest hotel to Brisbane Grammar.  It is a modern hotel, probably *** or maybe ****.  A very nice hotel anyway.  It is a mere minute from the venue, out the door, across the road and a stroll into the school grounds.  Their prices:
Executive Suite $95 for 2, $25 each extra person, sleeps up to 4 people
Deluxe Suite $108 for 2, $25 each extra person, sleeps up to 4 in 2 Queen-size beds, so you would all have to be very good friends.  Breakfast is $14 per person.  They do a lunch for $10 (like lasagna, spag bol, or a steak sandwich), $8 soup, $20 main courses.

Barbizon Apartments 491 Wickham Tce  3833 6500.  Would be about a five minute stroll, a bit up hill, but as Grammar is on the ridge above the city, everything to Grammar is up hill.  These are self-contained accommodation – kitchenette, etc.
Queen and Single for $142, Queen and pull out double $162, Queen, 2 singles and a sofa – 5 people $225.

Summit Central Apartments 32 Leichhardt St 1800 061 358 This is about 7 minutes walk, also up hill.  Their website shows that a studio apartment is $145, a one bedroom is $175 and a two bedroom is.$240.

Hotel Grand Chancellor 23 Leichhardt St 3831 4055.  Across the street from the Summit, so practically the same distance.
Double or twin $170 (incl. Breakfast $202), Triple share $205 (with Breakfast $303)  That’s what she said – triple breakfast seems a bit expensive to me, but if the room prices are right for you, then you can check about the breakfast when you book.

Best Western  Gregory Tce. 13 17 79  Couldn’t get much sense out of the phone call to them.  It was a USA call center, I think.  But as it belongs to the Best Western chain, you could give it a go yourself.  The advantage of this one is that as it is on Gregory Terrace, the 8 minute stroll is practically on the level as it runs along the ridge that Grammar is on.

Cheers Tavern situated on Boundary St. 500 metres from Grammar.  They offer 2 for 1 lunches on weekends, top price $19 for rump steak, salad, etc. so that would be $9.50  each.  On Mondays they have a lunch special for $6.50, mostly steak sandwich, pizza.

Spring Hill Hotel 100 Leichhardt St 3831 0102.  10 minute stroll, not too strenuous.  This hotel offers a room rate for a whole week, which is cheaper than 4 days.  They have a liquor licence until 2a.m. on Saturday, but even though, I would say that most of the clients are fairly civilized.  They have a lot of permanent residential guests, so not many rooms are available for casual booking.  Their rates, however, are:
Single room $150 for the whole week.
Double room, either a double bed or 2 singles $185 for the whole week.

Metropolitan Motor Inn 106 Leichhardt 3831 6000 www.metropolitanmotorinn.com  This inn is across the road from the Spring Hill Hotel, and is more up market.
   Rates: 2 for $99, 2 for $110, 4 for $149

Spring Hill Mews 27 Birley St 3232 0000 www.springhillmews.com  Also about 10 minute stroll.
   Rates:  2 bedroom for 4 $153

Dorchester Inn 484 Upper Edward St 3831 2967 www.dorchesterinn.com.au  This is a less commercial establishment, not high rise, I guess it is a renovated house, added to to provide accommodation.  The Dorchester and Annie’s would be about a 12 minute stroll.
   Rates: 1 person $70, 2 people $83, 3 people $96

Annie’s  Shandon Inn 405 Upper Edward St 3831 8684.  Again not high rise – seemed like a homey sort of place.
Single room, share bath, $55 with breakfast
Twin or double, share bath, $65 with breakfast
Twin with ensuite, $75 with breakfast
Twin or double, with an extra single bed, $85 with breakfast.

Astor Apartments  35 Astor Tce 3839 9022 www.astorapartments.com.au  Just a bit further than the Dorchester and Annies, but this is more modern.
   Rates: 2 for $99, 3 for $115

Alatai on the Park 391 Wickham Tce 3839 0060  I tried to ring them twice and got their fax.  This is a modern establishment, has a Chinese restaurant attached to it, close to the Grand Chancellor, so about 8 minutes from Grammar.

Good Earth Hotel 345 Wickham Tce 1800 777 789 www.goodearth.com.au
Room only for 2 - $102; with breakfast $136
Room only for 3 (2 singles and a roll away) - $119.

Soho Motel 333 Wickham Tce 3831 7722  a *** place.  The Soho Motel was actually the first purpose built motel in Brisbane, but it has had extensive updates, and a mini update every year, so it is a nice motel.  At the moment, advance booking for Easter are not heavy so they are offering discounts for an early booking.
Single – early booking $82 ranging up to $106 full price
Double – early booking $92 ranging up to $126 full price

Metro Hotel Tower Mill 239 Wickham Tce 1800 004 321 Probably about 12 minute stroll, up hill of course.  Their rooms are $109 a night.  She did not offer any further discussion as they do not do triple shares, etc.

Astor Metropole 193 Wickham Tce  1800 046 835 www.astorhotel.com.au  12 minute stroll.
   Rates:  2 for $99, 3 for $115

Inchcolm Hotel 73 Wickham Terrace 3226 8888  A good 10 minute walk.  Top class hotel.
Deluxe Suites, Queen and a sofa start from $153.  She said this was a 15% discount.
Executive Suites, Queen and 2 singles in 2 bedrooms, $170 and $20 each extra person.

Acacia Inner-City Inn 413 Upper Edward 3832 1663 near the Metropole.  The man laughed when I said I was enquiring for Easter next year, so I told him not to laugh about it being for the Scrabble Championships.  He did.
They offer 6 ensuite rooms, $80 double or twin, $20 an extra person
Share bath $70 a double or twin
Share bath $60 single

Normanby Hotel 1 Musgrave Rd 3831 3353   3366 1188 No accommodation.  But possible for lunch 5 minutes stroll.  Extensive lunch menu but not cheap - $14 for salads and burgers, most mains around $20.  Famous old hotel, I think they have the marble championships there each year or cockroach races or something.

Hotel L.A. cnr. Caxton & Petrie Tce 3368 2560 www.hotella.com.au

Spring Hill Gardens 101 Bowen 3839 0465  www.springhillgardens.net about 12 minutes from Grammar.
1 bedroom apartment, Queen bed, $129 and extra $20 for a third person on the couch.
2 bedroom apartment with 2 bathrooms, 2 Queens or a Queen and 2 singles $169, Queen and 3 singles $189, 2 Queens and a sofa also $189, so those would be for 5 people.  These apartments have a full kitchen, I think, and would be quite spacious.

Holiday Inn attached to the Transit Centre is quite expensive.  2 people for $209.  I don’t think anyone would opt to stay there in preference to some of the nice hotels closer to Grammar.

Trancontinental Hotel 482 George 3236 1366  No accommodation.  Just across the road from the Transit Centre.  They offer $5 steaks for dinner.  Next door to the Tin Billy Backpackers, so I guess, lots of young people.  Sounded like a fun place.

City Park Apartments 251 Gregory Tce 1800 700 038 www.cityparkapts.com.au  This is a little further on from the Best Western, so an easy stroll without too much up hill.
   Rates:  2 for $110/$120, 4 for $135/150

Backpackers Type are just over 1 km from the venue;  websites can be found by Googling “Brisbane Backpackers” and search through there.

Palace Backpackers 308 Edward St 3211 2433  This is a really lovely old Queenslander. Three or four storeys.  Heritage listed.  More than a 15 minute walk, up hill, the prices I list here are for room accommodation.  It is cheaper for dormitory accommodation, but I think you have to have a full backpack to be offered a dorm.
   Rates for a 4 night stay:  1 for $35 each, 2 for $27 each, 3 for $24 each, 4 for $24 each

City Backpackers Upper Roma St  A 10 minute walk through Albert Park and up to Grammar.  Information from the Google site – for a 4 night stay
Share bath, 3 person, $285
Ensuite, 3 person $295
Share bath, Double or twin $190
Ensuite, Double  $280
Share bath, Single $185

Tin Billy 466 George St. (opp. Transit Centre) www.tinbilly.com
   Rates:  6 – 8 dorm $24 each, 4 – 5 dorm $26 each, Twin $41 each

Central Backpackers 380 Upper Roma St 3211 3221  Near City Backpackers.

YHA Upper Roma St 3236 1004  www.yha.com.au

Cloud 9 Hostel 350 Upper Roma St 3236 2333  They say they have twin and double accommodation, but was not able to find out anything so far ahead.

Etons Bed & Breakfast 436 Upper Roma St 3236 0115 www.babs.com.au/eton
Rates: 2 for $110/130 continental buffet breakfast

There also a Tourist Guest House, on Gregory Terrace, still further on from the Best Western and City Park Apartments.  Rates for this, as it is also a backpackers, range from $25 each night for a 4 night stay.
