The WESPA Championship is an invitational event with quotas for WESPA countries, following in the tradition of World Scrabble Championships which were held in each odd year from 1991 to 2013.

Allocations

Each country is allocated a number of places based on its past performance at World Scrabble Championships. Each country's national association establishes rules for qualifying for those places, typically based on national tournament ratings or performance at qualifying tournaments or flagship events.

Dropouts and Alternates

Any player already named who drops out before registration at the event site should, if possible, be replaced by a representative from their own country.

A registered player who does not turn up at registration, or drops out during the tournament will not be replaced other than if the numbers are odd when the official standby from the host country will stand in.

Notes

  • In the past, the size of the field was maintained at 100 by using a formula which added and subtracted spots for a country based on the performance of their teams.
  • For this Perth event, WESPA decided to increase the total allocation to 150. The existing formula was used to add and subtract places based on team performance at Prague in 2013 and then extra spots were allocated based on the new numbers - 3 spots to countries with allocations of 9 or more; 2 spots to countries with allocations of 6 to 8, and 1 spot to countries with 2 to 5 spots. For countries that had a single spot, those that finished in the top two thirds at Prague (top 73) were given an additional spot, the others remained at 1.
  • Countries wishing to participate for the first time must form a recognized National Association and determine an appropriate qualifying system. Any qualifying tournament must have at least six participants. WESPA reserves the right to ask for evidence in case of doubt.
  • Should any country be unable to take up its allocation, please be considerate and decide and inform us before 31 July 2015. If your country has not already done so, please confirm the name and contact details of its official country contact for further communication as soon as possible.
  • We reserve the right to contact countries to establish that they fulfil the criteria for sending a team to the Championships.
  • Quotas for any such event in the future will similarly be based on team performance (and attendance) in Perth.
